Coal Transportation Banned in Meghalaya by the Supreme Court

The Supreme coart has banned the coal transportation in Tuesday , January 15,2019 till February 19, the next date of hearing.

On December 2018,a serious Accident happened 15 miners were trapped for 25 days in a flooded rathole mine at Ksan village in East Jaintia Hills district. Two miners were later found dead.The mine workers have not been rescued till date despite efforts made by the state and the central government. The Supreme Court has also been monitoring the rescue measures after a PIL was moved in this regard.

A Supreme court bench of Justices which included A.K Sikri and S. Abdul Nazeer, banned the transportation of coal till February 19, the next date of hearing, and asked the Meghalaya state government to prevent illegal coal mining despite the ban already imposed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) and to also file an affidavit.

The Meghalaya government has also been seeking time since 2014, to allow transportation of coal despite the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on rat-hole mining.In 2014, the NGT had banned mining but allowed transportation of the extracted coal.
