How Lockdown was Beneficial for Environment
I agree this lockdown has affected us in many different ways, but we also can't deny the fact that, the earth which is our home is healing because of this lockdown.
To tackle the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, many countries had adopted lockdown procedures
that stopped people from moving out and for shops, educational institutions and other establishments to close down. Due to which most of the things which was affecting the environment has been stopped.
As World Environment Day, 2020 is coming near we take a look at the benefits, the lockdown has on our environment.
World Environment Day :
World Environment Day, it was first held in 1974 and is celebrated every year on June 5. It stood for raising awareness about issues related to the environment like air pollution, marine pollution, global warming, human overpopulation, etc. It has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over more than 143 countries annually.
Before lockdown :
Before the pandemic the air was much polluted and toxic, to breathe in , due to various types of gases that had been emitted over the centuries. The Earth faced rising temperatures, which in turn led to the melting of glaciers and rising of sea levels. Environmental degradation was happening fast due to the depletion of resources such as air, water and soil. But after the coronavirus lockdown, there have been slight changes in the environment, which really showed the evidence, how our earth is healing.
Benefits of lockdown for our Environment :
Air quality is improving :
Since, there was lesser travelling done by people, whether it be by their own vehicles, or by trains and flights, even industries were closed down and not allowed to function this in turn led to the pollution of air to drop significantly as there was a decline in emission many gases in air. Since pollution is decreasing, the global temperature is decreasing too.
Also, The hole in stratosphere is healing too.
Since there are no boats, whether they be fishing or pleasure ones, plying on the rivers and waterways, the water has cleared up. Also since the temples are closed, so no rituals were done in water, which led to decline in temple waste into the water.
In areas like Venice, the water became so clear that the fish could be seen and there was better water flow.
Visuals of cleaner River ganga have emerged from kanpur and varnasi. It happened because of the shutdown of most of the industries.
Animals have been spotted moving about freely where once they would not dare to go. Even sea turtles have been spotted returning to areas they once avoided to lay their eggs, all due to the lack human interference. These days we can also hear the sounds of birds, chirping insects more, which give the evidence that the nature getting reborn again.
Effect on vegetation :
Plants are growing better because there is cleaner air and water, and because yet again there is no human interference. With everything at a standstill, plants are allowed to thrive and grow and produce more coverage and oxygen. Nowadays we can see more greenery than average.
In conclusion, though there has been a positive impact on the environment due to the lockdown, there is fear that once people start travelling again or go back to doing what they have been doing, all the positive impact will also start to disappear. But if we can lessen the things which are affecting our environment then i guess our environment will be safer.
I don't know this will happen or not but to make the environment better, lockdown should be given in every country once in a year, for somedays, with proper guidelines. Like, how we celebrate the World Environment Day like that only to make the environment better we can also celebrate lockdown.
Do comment if you guys Agree with this or not.
