Series of landslides claims 20 lives in Barak Valley
The series of landslides in Assam took place early in the morning today due to the heavy rains in the region
20 lives were lost in Barak Valley on Tuesday due to the seperate landslide in the three districts of Assam.
According to officials, six people in Karimganj district, and seven each in Cachar and Hailakandi districts have been crushed by debris.
"This landslide has been triggered due to abnormal rains. There were 9 in this family. The wife of the family and a 15-year-old son survived the landslide and have been taken for a medical check-up", an official said. Several persons also died in a landslide that took place in Hailakandi district.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonwal expressed deep anguish at the loss of lives due to landslides triggered by incessant rain in Barak valley. The CM wrote “I have directed Cachar, Hailakandi & Karimganj district administrations and SDRF to step up rescue, relief operations and facilitate all possible help needed to those affected”.
