Assam boxer Shiva Thapa has become India’s 1st gold-medallist at the President’s Cup boxing tournament after receiving a walkover in the finals in Astana, Kazakhstan on Saturday, July 20.
The 4 time Asian medallist made his international debut in the newly-introduced Olympic category of 63 kg at the tournament where he was supposed to fight Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin in the summit clash.But the Safiullin had to pull out of the tournament due to injury.
Earlier in the last-four stage bout, Thapa had defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Argon Kadiribekuulu 4-1.
Shiva Thapa received words of praise from Minister of state Youth Affairs and Sports Mr Kiran Rijiju.
